Horse and His Boy

11×17
Watercolor to Digital Illustration

2 page illustration layout and book cover based off of C.S. Lewis’s The Horse and his Boy. The illustrations are based off a section in the book where a horse’s tail is cut off and the main characters enter a large city called Tashbaan. The horse’s pose in the layout is design to showcase his emotions and the shortness of his tail by simultaneously showing his face and his tail. The city has a slight glow, indicating sunrise to further collaborate with the story and displays a multitude of buildings behind the wall (which plays an important role in the story) to emphasis how large and chaotic Tashbaan is.

The book cover has the central focus on the lower half of the page, leaving space for the book title. The background features scenery specific to the story but left purposely hazy so as to keep focus on the horse and boy. The pose of the characters was chosen the emphasize the size difference and create the flipped authority structure in that the horse is the leader, not the boy.
